One of the sevenfold path of Buddhism is Right Effort, also known as Right Diligence. This path is about making a consistent effort to develop and maintain wholesome states of mind and to abandon unwholesome states of mind.
Right Effort includes 4 specific aspects:
- The effort to prevent the arising of unwholesome states of mind.
- The effort to abandon unwholesome states of mind that have already arisen.
- The effort to maintain and develop wholesome states of mind.
- The effort to strengthen and bring to perfection wholesome states of mind that have already arisen.
This path is about being mindful and aware of your thoughts, emotions, and actions and making a conscious effort to cultivate positive states of mind, such as compassion, generosity, and wisdom, and to let go of negative states of mind, such as anger, greed, and ignorance.
It is a path of self-discipline, and it requires consistent effort, patience and perseverance. It's not only about the big decisions in life, but also about the small, everyday choices and actions that influence our thoughts and emotions.
